Concerned about Allergies? Come and Hear Author of Food Allergy Memoir

Allergies pose problems for many Americans, but few people are completely denied cake on their birthday because of these allergies.  Sandra Beasley, author of Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, will speak about her trials of having severe food allergies at the Fairfield Public Library Woods Branch, 1147 Fairfield Woods Road, on Sunday, October. 16 at 2 p.m.

Beasley is an award winning poet and nonfiction writer from Washington, D.C. Her essay work has been featured in Washington Post Magazine.  Beasley was an editor for The American Scholar and she currently serves on the board for the Writer’s Center. Beasley also writes a blog titled Chicks Dig Poetry.  Beasley has struggled with her many allergies including dairy, beef fruit and nuts since childhood.  During her birthday parties, her many allergies led to her mother warning party guests “don’t kill the birthday girl.”

Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life is Beasely’s memoir about growing up with severe allergies.  The book is a cultural history of food allergies in America and deals with allergy issues and the challenges that arise from having these food allergies.  Beasley intertwines science and anecdotes from her life from disastrous dinner dates to her difficult career as a restaurant reviewer throughout her new book.
