Fairfield Public Library brings Best-Selling author Lisa See to Fairfield

Come and join all the avid book club members in Fairfield and beyond and celebrate one of their favorite authors – Lisa See. The “immersive atmosphere” of critically acclaimed author, Lisa See’s book Dreams of Joy brings to life the China of the 1950s for its readers. See will discuss her New York Times bestseller on Tuesday February 21 at 7 p.m. in the Fairfield University Oak Room, 1073 N. Benson Road. The Fairfield Public Library and Fairfield University are co-sponsoring this event.

The popularity of book clubs continues to grow across America with more book clubs for men and multi-generational ones. Fairfield Public Library hosts nine book clubs and serves another thirteen book clubs in our community. Friends President Khorshed Randeria leads two unique clubs – one focusing on books written by international authors and one co-hosted with the National Association of Mental Illness. Librarians on Loan can be “borrowed” by a book club and they will lead your book club discussion.

Dreams of Joy continues the story of sisters Pearl and May from See’s previous novel, Shanghai Girls. This novel focuses on Pearl’s daughter, Joy as she searches for her birth father. Through her search, Joy becomes involved in the New Society of Red China. Fearful of Joy’s safety, Pearl confronts her past in search for her daughter.

Town Librarian Karen Ronald is thrilled to be hosting Lisa See and commented: “I heard Ms. See speak at a Library Conference and was so enchanted by her I just had to ask her to visit Fairfield. She said yes and we stayed in touch. At long last our community will be able to meet this great storyteller in person.”

See has written nine books, focusing on some aspect of Chinese culture.  Her books span from women living in 17th century China to 20th century Chinese immigrants living in Los Angeles. See designed a walking tour of the Los Angeles Chinatown and has helped to curate exhibitions for the Chinese-American Museum in LA.  See embraces her Chinese-American background through her writing and active life in Los Angeles.
