SHU to Host ‘Health Care & the Aging: A Symposium for the 21st Century’

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University will host Health Care & the Aging: A Symposium for the 21st Century on March 15, 2011, at 7:00pm in the Schine Auditorium on campus at 5151 Park Avenue in Fairfield, CT.  This event is being presented to the SHU community, local geriatric professionals and to anyone who has an interest in the welfare of the elderly population. The intention of this event is to foster education and communication as well as engage the community in the issues presented by our aging population.

The symposium will begin with light refreshments at 6:30pm and a screening of the film Young @ Heart, a documentary about a senior citizen chorus from Massachusetts who perform songs by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay and Sonic Youth.  Following the film, Dr. Salome Brooks of SHU’s College of Education and Health Professions and director for the Geriatric Health and Wellness Program will lead a panel discussion including Dr. Raymond M. Gabriele, gerontologist and adjunct professor in the Geriatric Health and Wellness Program, Kathy Abrahamsen, director of admissions at the Carolton Chronic & Convalescent Hospital in Fairfield, CT, and Suzanne Bastos, a physical therapist and geriatric clinical specialist at the Springs at Watermark in Bridgeport, CT. The panel discussion will be followed by questions from the audience.
