St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School to host S4 - Successful Study Skills 4 Students

Time management, executive functioning and organizational skills are the essential foundation for academic success, allowing students to be more confident and better prepared for academic success, while providing critically needed tools for life beyond.

Recognizing that many middle school students need additional support in study skills, time management, organization, and executive functioning, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, a 2010 recipient of the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award, is hosting a 4½ hour 2-session after-school study skills workshop in January offered by S4 – Successful Study Skills 4 Students, at the Fairfield Public Library.

Patricia Brady, Principal at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School said: "Study skills are the critical and necessary foundation for academic success. We are pleased to be able to make the S4 program available to our students."

Lauralton Hall is also offering the S4 program to area high school students on their campus, in a slightly longer format in January. In this case, five 1½ hour sessions are being offered on Mondays, starting January 24.

Connie Tallman, Director of Guidance at Lauralton said: "The S4 program is designed to instruct and equip students with specific study skill strategies, tools and methods to achieve effective and efficient learning in organization, time management and executive functioning. We are happy to host S4 on the Lauralton campus so that high school students in our community may take advantage of these important tools."

Taught by accredited, engaging and Virtus certified teachers, the S4 program is based entirely on educational research and proven benchmark studies. The goal of the S4 workshop is to equip students with the skills they need to be successful learners and students.

In a highly participatory and lively presentation, students learn skills and tools they can use in school — and in life. With an accessible, logical and easy-to-implement system, S4 offers a template for students' success - both in and outside of school. Key taught tools and skills of the program include:

● Goal Setting & Time Management
● Notetaking Methods
● The Importance of Asking Questions
● Understanding Main Ideas & Important Details
● Active Reading Strategies
● Generating Effective Questions
● Using Pictures & Graphic Organizers
● Summarizing to Learn
● Notebook Organization
● Test Preparation Strategies

Limited class size ensures participation in specific interactive activities designed to reinforce the skills taught and engage even the most reluctant student.
