Talking about Books--The Iliad with Dr. Mark Schenker @ Fairfield Public Library

The Fairfield Public Library is happy to announce that popular discussion leader, Dr. Mark Schenker, will be presenting a lecture series on The Iliad this fall.  The series will be held on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the Rotary Room at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road on October 4, October 18, November 1 and November 15.

Dr. Schenker will offer a four-session series on The Iliad by Homer in the Robert Fagles translation (Penguin, 1990).  He will consider the poem as a literary experience, both in the contemporary context of our reading it—it remains a powerful anti-war poem—and in the context of ancient Greek culture.  Dean Schenker will also discuss comparisons and contrasts with Homer’s other great epic, The Odyssey, and the ways in which the Homeric representation of human nature and divine nature speak to our modern, secular age.
