Talking About Books—Literature and Life with Dr. Mark Schenker
The Fairfield Public Library is happy to announce that popular discussion leader, Dr. Mark Schenker, will be presenting a lecture series on Literature and Life this fall. The series will be held on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Rotary Room at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road on October 6, October 20, October 27 and November 10.
In an introductory lecture, Dr. Schenker will explore how “the common reader”—Virginia Woolf’s phrase for the reader who is neither a critic nor a scholar—can increase the pleasure and understanding that the non-specialist seeks in literature. In the lectures that follow, he will consider how our reading experience is always inflected by life, which can include the contemporary milieu, the historical context, or the influence of other works of literature.
