Osborn Hill Students Provide Bikes to Needy

Donate and work on bikes for the CT Bike Project

Editor's note: The following news release was received from Heather Dean, publicity chairwoman of Osborn Hill School's PTA:

On Monday, June 20th, the Osborn Hill School 5th grade class actively participated in their community service project refurbishing donated bikes to benefit the CT Bike Project.

The CT Bike Project is a program that collects and distributes donated bicycles in good working condition to financially challenged children and adults. Besides offering the bikes to children for recreation, the aim of the endeavor is to provide needed transportation to work and errands to the economically disadvantaged, individuals with physical or mental disabilities that prevent them from driving, ex-offenders re-entering the workforce and other folks who cannot afford a vehicle.

Each 5th grade student was invited to bring in a bicycle to be donated. Drop-off began at 8:00 a.m, with each class taking turns working on the bicycles throughout the morning. They rotated through work stations such as "Inflating," "Clean-up" and "Chain Work."

As the work date approached, students learned more about the potential impact their efforts will have in the lives of the bikes' recipients. Our greatest hope is that this project provides our children with a fun, learning experience that brings them together working on a common goal for the greater good.
