Riverfield, Holland Hill Make The Cut

Scaled-Back Facilities Plan Includes Major Renovations, Additions at Both Schools In Next Four Fiscal Years

The Board of Education on Tuesday night is scheduled to review a revised facilities plan that cuts the cost of proposed school construction projects from $58 million to $42.4 million over the next four fiscal years.

The revised plan still calls for major renovations and additions at Riverfield School ($9.1 million in the next fiscal year, which begins July 1) and Holland Hill School ($10 million in the 2014-15 fiscal year), but the major renovation at Mill Hill School, previously proposed at $12 million in 2014-15, no longer appears on the list, nor does a major renovation at Dwight School, which was previously proposed at $4.5 million in 2014-15 after $1.2 million worth of work a year earlier.

But some work at Mill Hill School, which is one of the most crowded elementary schools in the district, does appear on the current list, such as installing a new ceiling and lights in 2012-13, new bathrooms in 2013-14, and a minor roof replacement in 2014-15. The current list also includes work at Dwight School, such as replacing two boilers in 2012-13, a major roof replacement in 2013-14, and bathroom renovations in 2014-15.

The revised plan also still includes renovations at Fairfield Ludlowe High School ($5.8 million in 2012-13) and Fairfield Warde High School ($6 million in 2013-14) that are partially designed to accommodate the enrollment bubble now moving through the middle schools.

When anticipated state reimbursements are factored in, the total cost of the four-year construction plan drops from $42.4 million to $33.8 million. The earlier plan totaled $58 million, which fell to $46.4 million after anticipated state reimbursements. The only schools where no work is planned over the next four fiscal years are Burr Elementary; Stratfield School, which already is undergoing a $17.6 million expansion and renovation; and Fairfield Woods Middle School, which is undergoing a $24.2 million expansion and renovation.
