Fairfield Fencers Sweep Greenwich

With the win, the Fairfield boys and girls each improve to 8-1-1 on the season

The regular season continued Tuesday night with the Fairfield fencing team taking on the Greenwich Cardinals at Fairfield Warde High School.

The Crimson Tigers were looking to get back on track after a tough outing at North Haven last week, and Greenwich proved to be just what the doctor ordered.

The meet started off with the men’s epee and women’s foil squads taking to the strips. Each squad lost their first bout, with the two wins leaders in George Whiteside and Ivy Wong falling for Fairfield.

However, this would not be an omen of things to come. Each showed why they have over 50 wins combined, with both winning their next two bouts. Epee starters Chris Dannhauser and captain Nick Bernardo each went 2-0 on the night.

But while the men’s epee squad rolled to a smooth 6-3 win, the ladies' foil had a tougher road. Down 4-2 going into the last round, they needed to sweep the last three bouts to take the match. They did just that with sophomore Alexandra Morrison winning her final bout 5-2 to secure the team victory.  Morrison finished the evening 2-1.

The men’s foil and women’s epee squads were up next, and they did not disappoint. The ladies were led by senior captain Charlotte O’Donnell who was 2-0.  She is now just one win shy of 20 on the season. Fellow senior Lauren McArdle went 2-1.

The men’s foil side of the gym saw an exciting rollercoaster ride of a match. Captains Greg Convertito and Garrett Bond led the way, each going 2-1 on the night. Bond was called upon to save the day at the end, winning his final bout to close the door on Greenwich.

With the victories, both the men and women raised their records to 8-1-1 on the season.

The Crimson Tigers and coach John Tejada next head to Guilford on Thursday before returning home on Saturday to host Bridgeport Central and Hale-Ray.

With just five dual meets left on the season, Fairfield is looking for momentum going heading into the state championships in March.
