Fairfield Looks To Advance To Little League Softball World Series on Saturday

Also in action are the Fairfield American boys, which begin their state final series against Glastonbury American

It is not a stretch to say that Fairfield has become the Little League capital of the state and possibly New England, as the town now has the distinction of holding New England titles in baseball and softball.

The softball team, which won the New England crown with a 7-6 victory over Maine on Friday, looks to take the next step on Saturday, when it faces New City, N.Y., in the East Region championship game in Bristol at 4 p.m.

A victory would send Fairfield to the Little League Softball World Series, which is set for Portland, Ore, Aug. 11-17. It also would match the accomplishment of last year's Fairfield American boys, who became the first team from the town to play in the Little League World Series.

Little League Baseball has conducted a softball World Series since 1974, and the only Eastern team to win it was Rhode Island in 1979. Warner Robins of Georgia is the defending two-time champions.

Texas leads with 11 softball titles, all by Waco, and Florida follows with eight. The only other state with multiple championships is California with five.

Ten teams advance to the softball World Series -- six from the United States and four from outside the country. They are divided into two groups of five with the top two finishers in each advancing to the semifinals, which will be televised by ESPN, along with the finals.
