Fairfield National Wins Inaugural Intermediate State Title

The Fairfield National Little League team defeated Coginchaug to become Little League Baseball's first ever Intermediate 50-70 Connecticut State Champions.

Fairfield National Little League won the first-ever Connecticut State Title for Little League Intermediate (50/70) baseball division after playing Coginshaug Little League in a best of three series in Durham, Conn., this past weekend. 

Fairfield National beat Coginshaug in two consecutive games become Little League Baseball’s first ever 2013 Intermediate 50-70 Connecticut State Champions. The first game was played on Saturday, July 13 and the second, final game was played on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

Fairfield National out scored Coginshaug 45 to 9 in the two games played. Fairfield National was lead by the hitting of Joey Mancini with three home runs, Bryan Azarian with two home runs and Tyler Llewellyn, Dylan Martin, Matt Cerminaro and Carter Kral with one home run each. Izaake Zuckerman added 2 doubles and Sean Sigmund had 4 hits.

Also playing on the team are Dylan Martin, Nick Lynch, Matt Coda, Jackson Twining and Aristotle Proskinitopoulus. The boys are coached by Rob Martin and Mike Coda. The entire team is managed by Bill Llewellyn.

“Since the Intermediate (50/70) Division was new to Little League, our approach was to play all of our games as backyard baseball. Kids could play whatever position they wanted since we wanted them to have fun and enjoy playing the game without any pressure," Llewellyn said in a release.

"Kids who never had a chance to pitch or play catcher for their little league teams were now able to do so. I think we achieved our goal since almost everyone of our boys stuck around for the playoffs and now they are Connecticut State Champions and playing for a chance to go to California and play for the first ever Intermediate World Championship.”

In this inaugural season for 50/70 baseball, Fairfield National won the District 2 championship when they faced then eliminated Fairfield American’s Intermediate 50/70 team. Then they advanced to the state title games.

Fairfield National will represent Connecticut in the Eastern Regional tournament at Cedar Road Park in East Northport, Long Island from Friday, July 19 through Thursday, July 25. The winner of this tournament will advance to the Little League Intermediate World Championship in Liverpool, California the week of July 30 through Aug. 5.
