Massachusetts surprised undefeated New Hampshire 9-4 in the second game of Thursday's semifinal doubleheader and will face Rhode Island in the championship game of the New England Regionals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Rhode Island ended Fairfield American's hopes of returning to Williamsport with an 8-7 win in Thursday's first game. In both of Thursday's contest, the victorious team avenged a loss in pool play.

Still, Fairfield American gave Rhode Island a major scare by nearly rallying from an 8-1 deficit with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

"The comeback shows the character and heart we have," Fairfield American coach Kevin Flynn said. "I told them to hold their heads high and be proud of what they've accomplished this summer."

Fairfield American defended its state title and came within two games of a return trip to the Little League World Series.

The two finalists in Saturday's game went 2-2 in pool play while the top seeds in New Hampshire (4-0) and Fairfield American (3-1) were eliminated.

Fedell's Mechanics fell 2-0 Thursday to Perdue Chicks of Maryland in its first game in the NABF World Series in Louisville.

Ten teams are entered in the tournament, and Fedell's is in pool B with Beecher Muskies, the defending national champions from Illinois, Perdue Chicks, Tampa Elite and Louisville Star Drywall, the host team.

Fedell's continues pool play on Friday against Louisville Star Drywall. The tournament continues through Sunday.

The Fairfield Rage 13U baseball team stormed its way through the competition at the 2011 Nutmeg State Games.

In capturing the gold medal, the Rage went 4-0, outscoring their opponents 38-11. The Rage is a non-profit competitive travel baseball program based in Fairfield for players aged 13-18.

Teams members are Tom Ryan, Patrick Calabrese, Patrick Craig, Nate Klein, Nick Nardone, Chris Howell, Sam Nardone, Connor Daley, Patrick O'Leary, Dan Stanco, Eddie Magi, Dillon Stimpson and Billy McGrath.

Former Fairfield Ludlowe stars Tom Nagy and Billy Malone are members of the Fedell's Mechanics team which is headed to the NABF World Series.

Shelton's Jason Foster tossed 7 2/3 innings as Fedell's defeated American Steakhouse 3-2 Sunday in the finals of the NABF Northeast Regionals at Quigley Stadium.

With the win, Fedell's, which plays out of the Senior City League in Bridgeport, qualified for the NABF World Series beginning Thursday in Louisville.

Foster allowed two runs and scattered 10 hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. He won Fedell's first and last games in the tournament and was named the Most Valuable Pitcher.

Foster, 22, pitched in the spring at Central Connecticut State University.

Ryan Cimino, 31, who played collegiately at Southern Connecticut, had a two-run double in the third when Fedell's scored all its runs.

Fedell’s, which was making its seventh appearance in the regionals, advanced to the World Series for the first time.

Fedell's begins pool play on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. against the Purdue  Chicks from Maryland. On Friday, it plays the Beecher Muskies, who are the defending World Series champions from Illinois.

Fedells, which went 5-1 in the regional, boasts an overall record of 28-10.

Connecticut Premier AAU Girl Basketball is hosting an eight-week clinic for all girls in grades four through 12.

It will take place at Staples High School in Westport on Saturdays beginning on Sept 17 and ending on Nov. 5. Grades 4-7 from 9am-10:30am. Grades 8-12 from 10:30am-12pm.

Tryouts for the 2012 season will take place on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 at Staples.
