Fairfield Scores And Standings: Dec. 19

Saturday was a strong day of wrestling from top to bottom for the program as the Mustangs' junior varsity and varsity teams earned several medals at the Guilford Invitational.

Warde's JV's came away with 14 medals, including first-place finishes by Mike Pellegrino and Ray Valle.

The varsity squad finished second only to Long Island's Warde Melville in the team competition. The Mustangs posted a score of 232 points, 30 points ahead of Xavier, currently ranked No. 1 in the state coaches' poll. Warde likely will move up from its current position of seventh.

The Mustangs placed in the top four in 12 of the 14 weight classes. They also had two champions: junior Pharoh Eaton (132)and sophomore Ahmed Hourani (HWT). The other top finishers included:

Terry Tarpey had a dominating game with 24 points and 16 rebounds as the Fairfield Prep basketball team routed Foran 67-44 on Friday to improve to 2-0.

Freshman point guard Thomas Nolan added 12 points and handed out five assists for the Jesuits.

Tarpey scored 11 points in the second quarter, helping Fairfield Prep build a 30-17 lead at the half.

Junior Tim Butala added 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds the Jesuits. James Richetelli paced Foran (1-1) with 13 points.

Devin Coleman scored 17 points and Demetrius Thomas added 14 as defending champion Bassick defeated Fairfield Warde 65-44 on Friday night.

The Lions (2-0) jumped out to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter, then stretched their advantage to 36-22 at the half.  Bassick opened its biggest lead at 45-24 in the third quarter.

Matt McTague was the only player to score in double figures for Warde (1-1) with 10 points. Might Wright and Sal Siciliano grabbed 14 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Alejandro Rodriguez scored a game-high 17 points Friday as the Greenwich boys basketball team defeated Fairfield Ludlowe 55-40 on Friday to improve to 2-0.

Greg Donlic added 16 points for the Cardinals, who won with defense, holding Fairfield Ludlowe (1-1) to single figures in three of the fourth quarters.

Greenwich, which already halfway toward matching last season's win total (4-16), figures to get a tougher test on Tuesday when it visits FCIAC.

Dan Upchurch scored 21 points and Arkel Miles added 17 Friday as the Notre Dame of Fairfield boys basketball team defeated Newtown 72-47 to win the Newtown Tipoff Tournament.

Miles was named the MVP of the tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Earl Coleman.

The Lancers, who are expected to contend for a second consecutive South-West Conference championship, raced to a 48-16 halftime lead.

Reid Schmidt scored 14 points and Kyle Wilcox added 12 for the Nighthawks.

Notre Dame of Fairfield defeated Bunnell 66-53 in its first-round contest on Thursday.

Sarah Nesi scored 20 points and Briana Curran added 14 as the Fairfield Ludlowe girls basketball team defeated Greenwich 48-38 on Friday.

The Falcons won their second straight to even their record at 2-2. They prevailed despite shooting less than 50 percent from the foul line (13-of-29)
, including 4-of-16 in the first half.

Caroline Barrett scored 15 points and Jenny Cespedes added 11 for Greenwich (1-3), which dropped its third straight.

Leading 21-17 at the half, Ludlowe took control with a 9-1 spurt to open the second half. The Falcons held a 37-22 advantage entering the final period.

Jamera Fountain scored 14 points as the Fairfield Warde girls basketball team overpowered Bassick 66-16 to earn its first win of the season.

Jerlyn Luther added 11 for the Mustangs, who improved to 1-3 while Bassick dropped to 0-4.

Warde allowed four points in each of the first two quarters to build a 39-8 halftime lead, then outscored the Lions 16-0 in the third quarter.

The Notre Dame of Fairfield girls basketball team dropped a tough 40-38 decision to New Fairfield on Friday.

Bianka Bell scored 19 points for the Lancers, who had a 38-37 lead late in the game.

But Emma Shollar, who had 14 points, scored with 27 seconds left to put the Rebels ahead. New Fairfield then added a free throw to ice the victory.

Notre Dame took a 30-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Notre Dame of Fairfield boys hockey team dropped  4-2 decision to Xavier on Saturday.

Brendan Walsh and C. J. Litwin scored for the Lancers, who dropped to 1-1.

Scott Klein made 30 saves for Notre Dame which was outshot by a 34-22 margin. Xavier snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of goals in the third period.

The Lancers are back in action on Thursday when they host top-ranked Fairfield Prep at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

The Fairfield Ludlowe wrestling team won its invitational tournament on Saturday. The Falcons posted a winning team score of 329.5, followed by McMahon (256); Fairfield Prep (221), Staples (212) and Ridgefield (161) to complete the top five.

Fairfield Ludlowe's Henry Wales was named the Most Valuable Wrestler.
