The boys basketball team will have a chance to clinch a state tournament berth on Friday, but the Mustangs will have to beat one of the FCIAC's hottest teams to do it as they host Trinity Catholic (7 p.m.)

After some rough stretches early in the season, the Crusaders have been on a roll and have regained their standing as one of the FCIAC teams to beat.

Trinity Catholic (11-3, 10-2) has reeled off six straight wins, including Tuesday's 60-45 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe, and has moved back into the top 10 in the New Haven Register's top 10 media state poll.

The Crusaders are led by Jason Boswell, a transfer from St. Elizabeth in New Jersey who is getting some Division I looks.

Warde (7-6, 5-6) has won two straight since its 44-43 loss to rival Fairfield Warde and is coming off Tuesday's 69-31 rout of New Canaan.

The Warde girls basketball team (10-5, 8-5) goes for its seventh straight victory at Trinity Catholic on Friday (5:45 p.m.)

The Mustangs, who defeated New Canaan 63-54 on Tuesday, are in a six-way tie for sixth in the FCIAC standings with Norwalk, Darien, Westhill, Staples and Stamford.

That group will be pared to no more than four teams following Friday's action as Norwalk takes on Darien and Westhill faces Staples. Stamford plays New Canaan.

Trinity Catholic (10-6, 9-5) is in fifth place in the FCIAC standings. Crusaders center Mackenzie Griffin recently became the seventh player in school history to score 1,000 points.

In other action Friday, the Fairfield Ludlowe boys (3-10, 3-8) visit Danbury (9-4, 7-4) and the Ludlowe girls (6-9, 5-8) host the undefeated Hatters (15-0, 13-0) in a pair of 7 p.m. games.

The Ludlowe girls, who are coming off a 56-39 loss to Trinity Catholic, need two wins to secure a state tournament berth.

Meanwhile, Fairfield Prep and the Notre Dame of Fairfield boys teams look to extend their winning streaks on Friday.

The Jesuits (12-2) go for their eighth straight win when they host Notre of West Haven at Alumni Hall (7 p.m.) while the Lancers (10-4) seek their sixth consecutive victory at New Fairfield (7 p.m.).
