The book is a compact history of basketball in the state of Connecticut, covering outstanding high school teams, college teams and the 33 state natives who have played in the NBA. There are interviews with many of the game's luminaries -- from Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Famer Calvin Murphy (Norwalk) to former NBA stars Charles Smith, Vin Baker, John Bagley, Wes Matthews and the late John Williamson, from former Harlem Globetrotter Alvin Clinkscales to Johnny Egan, Chris Smith, Chuck Aleksinas, Tony Hanson, Ed Goldstone and the inimitable Frank "Porky" Vieira.

Several coaches are featured: The late Fred Barakat of Fairfield University, Dave Bike of Sacred Heart, Dee Rowe, Joe Vancisin, Bill Detrick, Frank Crisafi and Harrison Taylor.

From an area standpoint, there is a strong emphasis on Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University; Roger Ludlowe High School's 1954-55 New England championship team, Bassick High of Bridgeport's undefeated 1988-89 state championship team, and the myriad athletes and coaches who emerged from the Bridgeport playgrounds -- Messrs. Vieira, Vancisin, Taylor, the two Smiths, Matthews, Walter Luckett, Clinkscales, Bagley, et al.

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, members of the Sound Tigers Booster Club and Special Olympics Connecticut are teaming up to hold the second annual Special Olympics Floor Hockey Invitational.

The event will give Special Olympics athletes who are floor hockey players from the Trumbull Tigers, Hamden New Haven Nighthawks, Mighty Ducks and Norwalk Green Machine Special Olympics teams the chance to hone their skills and face off with each other.

Fairfield University is graciously providing a venue at no cost. It will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 8:30am to 1pm at The Leslie C. Quick Jr. Recreation Complex (Field House).

Those interested in learning more about Special Olympics and its floor hockey program or just want to come and cheer on the athletes are invited to attend. To find out more, please contact Special Olympics at 203-380-9990, ext. 604 or jaya@soct.org.

Members of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Hockey Team and “Storm” are scheduled to appear to provide encouragement, sign autographs and take photos with the Special Olympics athletes.

Sound Tigers Booster Club members will provide volunteer support and are donating medals for the competition. As this is a Special Olympics-sanctioned event, play and equipment used will abide by the rules and guidelines set forth by the organization and qualified refs will officiate.

About 60 Special Olympics athletes who are currently enrolled in floor hockey training will participate. This invitational provides an additional opportunity for the teams to practice their skills and plays prior to competing in Special Olympics’ Winter Games Floor Hockey competitions to be held in East Hartford during the weekend of March 3-4.

The Sound Tigers will also host their “Special Olympics Connecticut Night with the Sound Tigers” at the Webster Bank Arena that night; as the Sound Tigers take on the Adirondack Phantoms.
