Fairfield Scores And Standings: Jan. 31

Terry Tarpey, the top scorer in Fairfield County, poured in 31 pointts, grabbed 16 rebounds and handed out five assists Monday to lead the to an 83-60 victory over Guilford.

It was the seventh straight win for the Jesuits, who improved to 12-2.  Guilford dropped to 3-10.

Tim Butala added 16 points for the Jesuits, who jumped out to a 25-19 lead after the first quarter and extended their margin to 42-34 at the half.

Fairfield Prep broke it open in the third quarter, outscoring the Indians 23-10 to take a 65-44 lead into the final period.

Nick Moretti scored 19 points to lead Guilford.

Fairfield Prep hosts Notre Dame of West Haven on Friday, its second-to-last home game of the regular season.

After finishing 2011 undefeated in the regular season and in first place in the states, the are continuing that streak in 2012.

On January 11, the boys varsity competed against Glastonbury, Cheshire, Staples and Greenwich and easily dominated the pack. Once again, junior Kyle Mason, led the team with a first-place finish (43.35) while Jack Cusick, an addition to the squad, placed fifth (45.33).

Ben Hawthorne, a returning junior, captured sixth place (45.39), and Andrew Kirkpatrick (45.40), Hamish Dewar (47.18) and Matt Chan (49.39) also were instrumental in the victory.

The boys combined junior varsity team also swept the competition on Jan. 11. Incoming freshman Davey Hawthorne took first place (48.62).

Junior Carl Forst claimed fifth place (50.85) and sophomore John Carey followed up in seventh (51.45). The top-six finishers also included Braeden Cummings, Zach Finzi and Weston Hall.

On Jan. 25, the Fairfield combined boys varsity defeated Fairfield Prep, Berlin, Daniel Hand and Ridgefield to improve to 7-0.

Although Fairfield Prep was a formidable opponent, Fairfield won by more than five seconds, taking four of the top-five places.

Mason again finished first (45.62) while Cusick was second (46.34).  Kirkpatrick took fourth (47.96) and Ben Hawthorne finished fifth (48.09). Dewar (13th) and Chan (20th)  contributed to the top-six times for the varsity team.

For the JV team, returning sophomore Bob Mitchell finished second,  followed by sophomore Brian Colonese (11th), Cummings (14th), Carey (17th), Tryg Sanberg (23rd) and Finzi 27th.

On Jan. 11, the Fairfield combined girls ski team faced off against Glastonbury, Staples, Cheshire and Lauralton Hall, and Fairfield edged Staples by 0.33 seconds to finish first.

Kelsey Tague (49.54), a returning sophomore, took home second-place for Fairfield and freshman Sarah Mason (49.76) finished third.

Lydia Brown (52.26), Flossie Dewar (52.58), Angie Walker (52.99) and Sydney Burton (53.34) rounded out the top-six finishers for Fairfield.

Leading the way for the victorious girls combined junior varsity team were Lauren Craighead and McKensie Hiltz, who finished first and second, respectively.

Jenny Pullen finished fifth, followed by Verena Sanders (seventh), Allie Davidson (ninth) and Evie Johnson (11th). Fairfield had 10 of the top-20 overall finishers.

On Jan. 25, the Fairfield combined girls team continued its success against Ridgefield, Berlin and Hand, improving to 6-0.

The varsity again was led by Tague, who took first place in her conference (49.97), and Mason, who finished third (50.38). Burton, (52.35), Brown (52.72), Walker (53.38) and Dewar (54.32) also had strong finishes.

The JV also dominated the night with Hiltz in first, Craighead in second and Caroline Lambert in third.  Davidson, Sanders and Johnson all finished in the top 12.

This is a busy week for the team as select athletes competed in the Giant Slalom Shootout for states on Monday with regular-season races on Tuesday and Wednesday at Mount Southington.
