Patch's contributing writer Don Harrison will be at the new Fairfield University Bookstore (located at the site of the former Borders) on Dec. 10 from 1-4 p.m. for a book-signing appearance.

Harrison's new book, Hoops in Connecticut: The Nutmeg State's Passion for Basketball, published in November by The History Press, will be available for purchase.

The book is a compact history of basketball in the state of Connecticut, covering many outstanding high school teams, college teams and the 33 state natives who have played in the NBA. There are interviews with many of the game's luminaries -- Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Famer Calvin Murphy (Norwalk), former NBA stars Charles Smith, Vin Baker, John Bagley, Wes Matthews and the late John Williamson, and former Harlem Globetrotter Alvin Clinkscales. Johnny Egan, Chris Smith, Chuck Aleksinas, Tony Hanson, the inimitable Frank "Porky" Vieira and coaches Dee Rowe, the late Fred Barakat, Joe Vancisin, Dave Bike, Bill Detrick and Harrison Taylor are also featured within these pages.

From an area standpoint, there is a strong emphasis on two local colleges, Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University; Roger Ludlowe High School's 1954-55 New England championship team, Bassick High School of Bridgeport's undefeated 1988-89 state championship team, and the myriad athletes and coaches who emerged from the Bridgeport playgrounds -- Messrs. Vieira, Vancisin, Taylor, the two Smiths, Matthews, Walter Luckett, Clinkscales, Bagley, et al.
