Third Grade Wildcats Fall to Wilton

The Third Grade Wildcats dropped a 20-13 decision to Wilton White on Saturday night in a FCFL playoff game.

Down 14-0, Fairfield stormed back in the second quarter with two touchdowns. Running back Harry Chandler willed his way into the end zone on a pitch from 10 yards out.  Quarterback Andrew Conklin scored the extra point with the help of interior linemen Jimmy Cullinan, Rowan Sullivan, Jack Gremse, and John Summers pushing from behind.

Conklin also connected with receiver Mathew Burger on a 25-yard bomb. The Wildcats scored their second touchdown on a 60-yard dash by running back Ryan McIntosh.  Center Jack McKenna led the way with some devastating blocks down the field.

Another offensive standout was quarterback Jack Morison, who ran for 20 yards and caught a pass for eight yards.  Morison also intercepted a pass in the first half.

On defense, tackle Jimmy Cullinan and defensive end Harry Chandler recovered fumbles created with hard tackles by linebacker Andrew Conklin.  Defensive lineman Jack McKenna remained a force throughout the game with multiple tackles for losses.

Fifth Grade Wildcats Advance To Second Round

The Wildcats rallied from a halftime deficit for a 20-12 win over the Ridgefield Raiders.

Trailing 6-0 at the intermission, the Wildcats scored on their first possession of the second half on a touchdown run by Aidan Wykoff. Liam Harke added the one-point conversion to give Fairfield a 7-6 lead. 

After the Raiders regained a 12-7 lead, the Wildcats put together another scoring drive, reaching midfield on runs by Jack Owens and Harke. Wide receiver Will Stearns then turned a 5-yard pass from quarterback David Summers into a 35-yard touchdown after two quick moves to avoid a tackle. Aidan Wykoff added the one-point conversion to make it 14-12.

Following Stearns’ touchdown, the Wildcats' defense stepped up with some great tackles by Griffen Forberg and Dan Russell to stop the Raiders.

In the fourth quarter, Jack Howard caught a pass on 4th-and-2 to sustain the Wildcats' final drive. Wykoff then scored on a 10-yard run, diving to hit the pylon for a 20-12 lead.

On the final play of the game, Ridgefield’s Hail Mary attempt was intercepted by Zach Iannucci to seal the victory and send the Wildcats to the quarterfinals.

Wildcats Seventh Grade Blue Crushes Westport

The Fairfield Wildcats seventh grade Blue team advanced to the quarterfinals with a 26-0 victory over the Westport Wreckers on Sunday at Fairfield Warde

The'Wildcats' first offensive play was a 67-yard touchdown run by tailback Ross Gallace to put Fairfield ahead 6-0.

In the second quarter, quarterback Jack Dowden completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyler Petry. Later in the quarter, Gallace scored his second touchdown of the game on a 10-yard sweep.

The most exciting play of the game was the extra point that followed. Dowden was nearly sacked by three different Wreckers yet managed to escape and complete a pass to Gallace for the PAT. Fairfield led 19-0 at the half.

Fairfield continued to roll in the second half. Tailback Gary Walsh gained 30 yards on three carries.

Linebacker Ethan Burger helped preserve the shutout while Tim Kane and Tommy Chandler were outstanding on the defensive line. In the fourth quarter, strong safety Austin O’Brien intercepted a ball batted by Kane at the line and returned it for a touchdown to put Fairfield up 26-0.

The seventh grade Blue team heads to New Canaan for the next round.

Eighth Grade Blue Wildcats Dominate Ridgefield Black

Led by its stingy defense, the eighth grade Wildcats advanced with a 14-7 win over Ridgefield Black.

Rafael Casas, who was playing only his second game at safety, had two interceptions while Patrick Craig picked off one pass.

Chris Howell, Spencer Foley and Connor Reilly provided some powerful running for the Giants, aided by the blocking of the offensive line.

The Wildcats will take on New Canaan Red in the quarterfinals at New Canaan.

Eighth Grade Red Comes Up Short Against Westport

The eighth grade Red Wildcats fell to Westport 33-13 on Sunday, scoring its touchdowns on a 50-yard punt return by Matt Kerigan and a 60-yard run by quarterback Timmy Foley, which came after a fumble recovery by Thomas Moore. Running back Jack Potenza scored an extra point for the Wildcats offf a faked kick.

Kenton Clarke, Patrick O'Donovan, Tommy Smalley, Jack Potenza and Peter Sacardi led the defense with solid tackling while Will Jacks, Tommy Magnusson and Clayton Mitchell provided protection on the offensive line.

The Fairfield Giants cheer team placed first in the regional semifinals and now wiill compete for the New England Regional championship on Nov. 19 in Worcester, Mass.

If the team is successful there, it will a earn a bid to compete in the national Pop Warner cheerleading championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.

The Giants will be paricipating in their third regional final in the last five years, a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the volunteer coaches and coordinators who make the Fairfield Giants Youth Football And Cheer organization a nationally recognized program.

Fairfield Prep's Connor Rog and Fairfield Warde's Henry Warnick will lead the local contingent at the state Open cross country meet, set for Tuesday at Hammonasset State Park in Madison. The boys race gets under at 1:45 p.m. and the girls go at 2:30 p.m.

The meet originally was scheduled for Friday at Manchester's Wickham Park was postponed. The location was moved because Wickham Park suffered damage in the recent snowstorm.

Rog won the Class LL race with a time of 15:50 while Warnick finished first in the Class L race with a time of 16:05.

Fairfield Prep had three finishers in the top 13: 5 Christian Alvarado (16:24), No. 11 Patrick Corona (16:33) and No. 13 Michael Whelan (16:38).

Fairfield Ludlowe's Heather Moriarty (20:06) finished 12th in the Class LL girls race while Fairfield Warde's Caroline Keough (20:36) was 16th in the Class L girls competition.

Four Fairfield teams have advanced in the Fairfield County Football League playoffs. Because of last week's postponements, quarterfinal games in each age bracket will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the playoffs before Thanksgiving. Semifinal games are set for this weekend will the finals scheduled for next weekend.
