The Town of Fairfield has announced that it will honor its various Little League champions during a ceremony next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room in Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Road.

The Board of Selectman will issue certificates of congratulations to each team member, their managers and coaches at this special recognition ceremony.

Among those honored will be Fairfield's 12-year-old softball team, which won the New England Regional championship at the Giamatti Little League Center in Bristol.

Also to be recognized are Fairfield's 11- and 12-year-old Little League state championship teams.  The 12-year-old All-Stars reached the New England Regional semifinals and came within two games of a return trip to the Little League World Series.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission today announced its 2011 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities the Commission serves.

The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner, Monday, Oct. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 p.m.

In each of the 15 communities, a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2010-Aug. 2011.

The winner from Fairfield is Fairfied Prep cross county standout Connor Rog, who is beginning his senior year.

Fairfield's James Blake will face fifth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain in the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday at the United States Tennis Center.

Blake, whose world ranking has dropped to 63rd, defeated Jesse Huta Galung of The Netherlands, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the first round on Tuesday.

Blake has advanced to at least the third round of the Open in each of his six previous appearances. He reached the quarterfinals in 2004 and 2005, the fourth round in 2007 and the third round in each of the last three years.

However, Blake will need to pull off a major upset to keep alive that streak this year.

The Fairfield United Soccer Association is conducting its annual FAST Labor Day tournament this weekend.

A total of 160 teams are entered in the event, making its one of the largest in New England.

FAST is a one-day tournament with girls playing on Saturday and the boys playing on Sunday. It is sanctioned by CJSA and the CJSA age limitations will apply.

FUSA is hosting the following age groupings: U9, U10, U11, U12, U13 & U14 in both boys and girls brackets.

Each participating team will play a minimum of three to four games in a in a round robin format. U11-U14 winners and runner-ups will receive individual trophies. Participation awards will be given for all players on U9 & U10 teams.
