The Fairfield Ludlowe boys basketball team continued its late surge Wednesday with a 63-49 victory over McMahon.

Mark Cerulli, senior captain, poured in 21 points for the Falcons, who improved 8-10 overall and 8-8 in the FCIAC with their fifth consecutive victory. The win also allowed the Falcons to clinch a state tournament berth after they were 3-10 at one point of the season.

Justin Berardino added 17 points, including four 3-pointers, for Ludlowe, while David Kinsley chipped in with eight points.

The Falcons led 15-11 after the first quarter before McMahon pulled within 29-28 at the intermission.

Ludlowe, however, put away the contest with a 19-8 surge in the third quarter that enabled the Falcons to take a 48-36 advantage linto the final period. The Falcons outscored the Senators 32-11 in the second half.

Larry McKinney scored 14 points and Darkym Stroud added 11 for McMahon, which dropped to 3-15.

With games next week against Trumbull and Darien, Ludlowe still has a chance to make the FCIAC playoffs.

The Falcons are in a five-way for ninth with Danbury, Fairfield Warde, Staples and Trumbull, one game behind Bridgeport Central, Greenwich and Stamford, who are all 9-7.

The Fairfield Ludlowe girls basketball team also clinched a state tournament berth with room to spare Wednesday as the Falcons routed McMahon 63-33 in Norwalk.

The Falcons rebounded from Monday's 63-50 loss to Ridgefield to conclude the regular season at 12-8 overall and 7-11 in the FCIAC.

Ludlowe made the state tournament after going 5-15 in Sarah Huntington's first season as coach last year, which followed a 6-14 finish in 2010.

The Stamford boys basketball team defeated Fairfield Warde 45-36 on Tuesday in a slow-paced game to keep their FCIAC playoff hopes alive.

Barry Boderick scored 19 points and brother Barry added 10 for the Black Knights, who improved 10-8 and 9-7. Warde dropped to 10-8 and 8-8.

Stamford's defense dominated early as the Black Knights jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the first quarter.

Warde pulled within 19-17 at the half, then tied it 31-31 after three, but the Black Knights put away the contest by outscoring the Mustangs 14-5 over the final eight minutes.

Michael Wright led Warde with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Sal Siciliano had eight points and seven rebounds.

Shawn Padilla had six rebounds and six blocks for Stamford, which is tied for sixth in the FCIAC standings with Bridgeport Central and Greenwich.

Warde is in a five-way for ninth with Danbury, Fairfield Ludlowe, Staples and Trumbull.
