On the day Steve Hetherman was officially named the head coach of the Notre Dame of Fairfield boys hockey team, the Lancers clinched a state tournament berth in dramatic fashion.

Erik Laaksonen scored under three minutes into overtime Thursday as Notre Dame rallied for a 4-3 victory over South Windsor at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

That goal came after Dave Canfarotta scored with just 42 seconds left in regulation to force overtime as the Lancers improved to 8-9. Notre Dame improved to 5-2 since Hetherman took over following the resignation of Marty Roos last month.

After a scoreless first period, South Windsor's Chris Glonfrico and Notre Dame's Erik Laaksonen traded goals in the second period.

In the third period, Connor Hibbs gave South Windsor (9-8) a 2-1 lead before Frank Sullivan tied it for Notre Dame with under six minutes remaining.

Zechariah Nicome then scored with just over three minutes left for a 3-2 South Windsor lead before the Lancers answered for the third time on Canfarotta's goal.

Notre Dame finished with a 40-25 edge in shots. Scott Kline made 22 saves for the Lancers while Aiden Cain made 36 saves for South Windsor.

The Jesuits, who have won 11 in a row, to improve to 16-2, close out the season on Monday against at Cheshire before beginning play in the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament.

Fairfield Prep won its early meeting with Foran 67-44 in Milford on Dec. 16. The Lions are coming off last Friday's 51-41 loss to Amity that dropped them to 10-8.
