Hannah Jeffrey scored three goals and Emily Bacon added a pair Monday as the Greenwich defeated No. 12 seed Fairfield 6-1 in the first round of girls hockey tournament at the Dorothy Hamill Rink.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals, who were thumped by New Canaan 8-0 on Saturday in the FCIAC championship game, will take on No. 3 Ridgefield in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Winter Garden Arena in Ridgefield.

It was the first state playoff game in program history for Fairfield, which finished the year at 7-11. Annie Kaye Ficarra scored Fairfield's only goal in the third period.

Erin Ferguson had four assists ford Greenwich while Meghan Spezzano added three helpers for the Cardinals, who outshot Fairfield, 37-10.

Jeffrey scored a natural hat trick -- three straight goals -- in the first period when Greenwich (14-7-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Maddy Graves also scored for the Cardinals.

Dart Freccia made nine saves for Greenwich while Stephanie Gabriel stopped 31 shots for Fairfield.

Ridgefield and Greenwich will be meeting for the fourth time this season. The Cardinals won two of the previous three contests, including a 4-3 win in the FCIAC semifinals last week.

The girls basketball posted a mild upset Monday with a 57-39 victory at No. 15 seed Classical Magnet on Monday in the first round of the Class M state tournament in Hartford.

With the victory, the 18th-seeded Lancers improved to 13-9 and will play at No. 2 seed Tolland in the second round on Thursday.

Tolland advanced with a 59-20 victory over No. 31 seed St. Paul Classic.

Amber James had 10 points and eight assists for the Lancers.

Olivia Levey scored 22 points Monday as second-seeded Lauralton Hall defeated No. 31 Fairfield Ludlowe 55-30 in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.

The Crusaders, who defeated Pomperaug in the SWC finals, improved to 23-1 and will face No. 15 East Catholic in the second round on Thursday. Ludlowe finished the season at 8-13

Cassie Gildea added 16 points for Lauralton, which jumped out to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 30-10 at the half.

Sarah Nesi led Ludlowe with seven points while Merideith McGann added six for the Falcons.

The Fairfield Warde girls basketball could not sustain a good start in Monday's game at No. 14 seed Glastonbury in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.

Courtney Latham scored 14 points and Ashley Mulryan added 11 for the Tomahawks, who posted a 65-48 victory over the 19th-seeded Mustangs.

Brielle Lanese scored 15 points and Jamera Fountain 12 for Warde, which jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first quarter but was outscored 51-29 over the final three periods.

It was the 19th consecutive state tournament appearance for the Mustangs, who finished the year at 12-9.

Glastonbury (18-6) will visit No. 3 seed Holy Cross in the second round on Thursday.

The Fairfield Prep hockey team concludes its regular season Tuesday against East Haven at DiLungo Rink at 7:30 p.m.

The Jesuits (16-3) are coming off a come-from-behind 4-3 victory at Hamden on Saturday in which David White scored all four goals for Fairfield Prep, which rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period.

The CIAC will release the pairings and brackets for the Division I state tournament on Saturday.
