Jamera Fountain scores 19 points in 47-33 win over the Falcons

Junior guard Jamera Fountain scored 19 points Monday night as the Fairfield Warde girls basketball team defeated town rival Fairfield Ludlowe 47-33 in a Coaches Vs. Cancer contest.

The Mustangs, who have won five of their last seven games, improved to 8-9 and 10-9.  Fairfield Ludlowe, which was coming off a 41-33 loss to Trinity Catholic, dropped to 4-13 and 5-14.

Junior guard Kate Kerrigan and Brielle Lanese added 12 and eight points, respectively, for the Mustangs.

Junior Briana Curran lead all Falcon scorers with 10 points with Jaime Quinn and Meredith McGann combining for another 11.

“That’s been the key while we’ve been making this run - our defense,” Fairfield Warde coach Dave Danko said. “It brings us an inch closer to possibly getting a home game and a higher seed in the state tournament.”

Missing shots became a common theme all game for the Falcons, who shot only 4-of-15 from the field in the first period. They didn't score their first points of the game until the 5:10 mark.

Warde quickly capitalized on the Falcons' missed shots, putting together an 8-0 run late in second to go up 20-8.   Ludlowe scored its only points from the field in the quarter with 15 seconds remaining in the half.

“We’ve been waiting for Jamera to come in and take over a game like that,” Danko said. “She did it at an appropriate time, against her rival, and set the tone for the game.”

Fountain tallied eight of her 19 in the third to help Warde outscore Ludlowe 14-6.  She added another five in the fourth to ice the win for the Mustangs.

“Our defense set the table tonight, and it’s been trying to set the table all year,” Danko said.

Warde finishes its regular season at Harding on Wednesday night.  Ludlowe hosts St. Joseph in its last game on Wednesday.
