Fairfield Warde Softball Holds Off Sheehan To Reach Class L Quarterfinals

The Fairfield Warde Mustangs advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class LL state tournament with a 4-3 victory over No. 20 seed Sheehan on Thursday.

Katlyn McCartney had two RBI for the fourth-seeded Mustangs (18-5), who had a bye in the first round. Warde hosts No. 5 Hand in a quarterfinal game on Friday at 4 p.m.

McCartney opened up the scoring for Warde with an RBI single in the first, scoring Stacey Dileo.

After Warde pitcher Gina Treglia retired the Titans' first six batters, she ran into trouble in the third, when Sheehan's first two hitters reached base before After Treglia got two outs, Katilyn Gill delivered an RBI single to tie the contest.

Kathryn Caissy scored the Mustangs' second run in the bottom of the third after Alyssa Borowy's hit went off the outstretched glove of Sheehan second baseman Alexandra Ottochian.

The Titans pulled even again in a see-saw affair on Kayla Humphrey's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but Warde answered with a pair in the bottom half to take control.

The Mustangs snapped the  tie on McCartney's RBI double, then made it 4-2 on Borowy's run-scoring single.

.Sheehan (11-11) did not down quietly, however. In the sixth,the Titans had runners on first and second with two outs before Treglia struck out Morgan Podlisny.

Then in the seventh, Holli Ryan lead off the inning with a double. Pinch-runner Lindsay Server reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Ottochian's sacrifice fly.

Treglia secured the victory for the Mustangs by striking out Mollie and getting Kayla Humphrey to fly out. 

Hand (17-4) advanced to Friday's game with an 8-4 win over Bacon Academy on Thursday.
