WICC/Mohegan Sun Annual Radiothon Raises More than $200K for SWIM Across the Sound

Donors, Volunteers, and Cancer Patients and Survivors Make WICC Radiothon a Success

The WICC/Mohegan Sun annual Radiothon for St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound was held on June 28 and 29, 2013. Every 15 minutes, guests shared personal stories on the air with St. Vincent’s Dr. Frank Scifo and Dianne Auger, President of St. Vincent’s Foundation.  The guests represented caregivers, cancer patients, cancer survivors, and individuals or organizations that had raised funds to support the SWIM. They told heart-gripping stories about the journey through the challenges of cancer and the ways that St. Vincent’s SWIM services and staff helped along the way.  Emotions ran the gamut from tears and struggle, to uplifting gratitude, hope and triumph.

Listeners called into the station and made donations in honor or in memory of loved ones.  Their testimonials were read live on the air by WICC Radio Personalities, including Tony Reno, Mike Bellamy, Jim Buchanan, and Tommy Vass, and Danny Lyons from WEBE 108.  “What would YOU do for the SWIM” has been the traditional motto leading up the annual event as a way of exemplifying the commitment so many have made to helping people with cancer via the SWIM Across the Sound’s 45 programs.

The 2013 Radiothon was highly successful, raising $214,000 to directly benefit cancer patients and survivors supported by St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound.

Lyn Fine-McCarthy, executive director of the St. Vincent’s Foundation stated, “We thank all who donated and all who volunteered their time.  We also are extremely thankful to WICC for allowing us to take over their offices for 1-1/2 days to conduct such a powerful and successful event.”
