Fairfield University, which shares a 204-acre campus on North Benson Road with Fairfield College Preparatory School, was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1942 and opened its doors in 1947 to its first class of 303 male undergraduates, all of whom were enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Today, Fairfield University is co-educational and has more than 5,000 undergradate, graduate and continuing studies students enrolled in six schools - the College of Arts & Sciences, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Nursing, Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions, and University College. Fairfield University has 3,300 undergraduate students and 1,200 graduate students.
Fairfield University offers 35 majors, 35 graduate programs and 17 interdisciplinary minors. The Rev. Jeffrey P. vonArx, S.J. is the eighth Jesuit to hold the presidency and assumed that position in July 2004.
Fairfield University has 20 NCAA Division 1 athletic teams and 10 club sports teams. The university has 80 student clubs and organizations.
