Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, one of seven Catholic churches in Fairfield overseen by the Bridgeport Roman Catholic Diocese, was established in 1922 after serving as a mission from St. Thomas Parish in the center of Fairfield.

The tower and cross of hand-wrought iron, rose window over the choir loft, altar of Botticino marble, and tabernacle of solid and sculpted bronze are original and still visible today. The church building was officially dedicated with a Solemn High Mass on Feb. 4, 1940.

In 1951, the parish built a church hall for teaching and parish activities, and this facility served as a schoolhouse three years later for the first class in Our Lady of the Assumption School.

In September 1955, a new 16-room parochial school building opened that served 250 students in grades 1 through 3, and, in 1961, Our Lady of the Assumption School graduated its first class of students.

Today, Our Lady of the Assumption School, 605 Stratfield Road, is home to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

In 1992, Msgr.
