Three Fairfield Men Hospitalized Following Off-Road Accident

Fairfield emergency personnel responded Saturday afternoon to two unrelated off-road rescues that were located on opposite ends of Fairfield.

At about 3:30 p.m. Saturday the Connecticut State Police notified the Fairfield Police Department of an off-road accident that a Trooper could see from the highway, according to Assistant Fire Chief Erik Kalapir.

Minutes later, emergency personnel located the accident about a half mile west of Westway Road in Southport. The vehicle was in the woods between Interstate 95 and the Metro North railroad tracks, Kalapir said.

Firefighters located a Chevrolet pickup truck that had crashed head on into a tree. The vehicle, which was occupied by four Fairfield men, suffered extensive front-end damage. Three of the four men were severely injured. They transported to local area hospitals, Kalapir said.

The vehicle apparently accessed the woods from an opening on Westway Road. Metro North Railroad was advised of the police and fire personnel operating near the tracks, Kalapir said.

In a totally unrelated incident, at about 3:20 p.m. emergency personnel responded to the hiking trails nearby Lake Mohegan after the Fairfield Fire Department received a report of a hiker that needed assistance. Rescuers were able to locate and assist the hiker with the help of other hikers in the are and by using landmarks, according to Kalapir.
