A Trip Through Muslim Journeys at the Fairfield Public Library

Take an intellectual sojourn through varied "Muslim journeys" with history teacher Brian Kelahan as we travel through the Islamic world.  Did you know that Muhammad's famous night journey, the al-Mi'raj, may have been an inspiration for Dante's The Divine Comedy?  Or that there is a possibility that Chinese Muslim Admiral Zheng He may have arrived in the Americas prior to Columbus?  Learn about the many Muslim pilgrimages including the famous Hajj to Mecca.  Find out why Muslim individuals and groups have chosen to migrate, explore and travel, and how these expeditions connect to Islamic history and culture.  Join us Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm in the Rotary Room at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.  Please register.

Presenter Brian Kelahan is a history teacher at Common Ground High School in New Haven, CT.  He completed his MA and PhD coursework in Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at New York University and has published and lectured on topics related to the study of Islam.

This event is part of the Library’s Muslim Journeys program, made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures initiative.  Other Muslim Journeys programs this fall include an Author Talk and Luncheon with Mahru Ghashghaei and Susan Snyder featuring their book Nine Rubies on November 14 and Stories from the Muslim World, a family program with traditional stories and folktales on November 17.

All programs at the Fairfield Public Library are free, but seating is limited.  To register or for more information, please visit our website at www.fairfieldpubliclibrary.org, or call 203-256-3160.
